Setting up openBVE
#1
choose your simulator
BVE Trainsim 2/4 (http://mackoy.cool.ne.jp/) are older simulators.

openBVE (http://trainsimframework.org/) is the target simulator of most (if not all) add-ons in this forum. This tutorial focuses on openBVE.

BVE 5 (http://bvets.net/) is the newest version of BVE Trainsim. It utilises a completely new format for add-ons. Few add-ons at this point in time are written for BVE 5.

download openbve

Follow the five steps of downloading openBVE and its dependencies as listed on the openBVE installation page (http://trainsimframework.org/use/download_windows.html).

Extract openBVE into a folder. We'll call this folder "openBVE".

set up folders

Inside the openBVE folder, navigate to UserData | Settings, and open filesystem.cfg with Notepad. Replace its content with the following:

Data = $[AssemblyFolder]/Data
ManagedContent = $[AssemblyFolder]/UserData/ManagedContent
Settings = $[AssemblyFolder]/UserData/Settings
InitialRoute = $[AssemblyFolder]/UserData/LegacyContent/Railway/Route
InitialTrain = $[AssemblyFolder]/UserData/LegacyContent/Train
RestartProcess = $[AssemblyFile]
RestartArguments =

Create a folder named UserData inside your openBVE folder.
Inside that folder, create the folders LegacyContent and ManagedContent.
Inside LegacyContent, create Train and Railway.
Finally inside Railway, create Route, Object and Sound.

Verify it looks like this...
Code:
openBVE
+ UserData
   + ManagedContent
   + LegacyContent
     + Train
     + Railway
        +Route
        +Object
        +Sound

download add-ons

I recommend you install the Birmingham Cross-city South route and Class 323 train first. Follow these instructions (http://railsimroutes.net/openbve/openbve_windows_2.php) to download the add-ons. The 'openBVE Content' folder in the linked tutorial refers to your openBVE > UserData > LegacyContent folder.

Hopefully, the above link will be able to show you the basics of how add-on files are organised in openBVE.
