Questions About Singapore Trains Network
#31
1) What is the speed limit for trains crossing x-overs e.g. on the CGL approaching/departing Changi Airport?

2) Is it possible for drivers to manually override the ATO in AM mode or must they switch to CM Mode (when standstill)?

3) What is the max speed limit for NSL and EWL trains in RM mode (when moving in/out of a depot)?

4) What is the max speed limit for NEL and CCL trains at Sengkang and Kim Chuan Depots respectively?

5) Why must a driver be running in CM mode when a construction site is situated near the NSL/EWL tracks or when there's heavy rain?

6) How does the STARIS route indicator above thhe C151/C651/C751B train doors work even without ATC/ATO?

7) Where is the Sentosa Express depot located at?

1. Speed limit for crossings is normally MSS/TS 40/39.

2. Auto mode does not allow drivers to do actions other than opening the doors at the end of the inter-station run. The driver is in a hands-off-controls position when the train is running in Auto mode. When the train encounters a situation which the driver needs to take over, he changes mode to CM and assumes control. If emergency brake is needed during auto mode, pressing the red 'mushroom' or emergency button will activate the emergency brakes.

3. Depot tracks have no signalling and hence maximum speed is 18 km/h.

5. Construction sites normally have cranes, and after the accident involving a Siemens nearly colliding with fallen hoardings in the late 90s, MRTC made it mandatory for trains to operate on CM and at reduced speed near construction sites, to increase safety margin and make sure the driver is aware of the situation ahead. ATO operation would encounter wheel slip during rain, as the computer is not programmed to accept all rail adhension and this will cause discomfort to passengers. Moreover during braking or station stopping profile run wheel slip occurs and if not arrested in time by the computer will cause overruns. To reduce discomfort, overruns and unnecessary delays, running at CM and reduced speed is the solution.

6) its because the STARiS is base on the Distance the Train Travel and not on the ATO signals...

5. Trains must run in CM during heavy rain, as the friction between the wheels and the tracks, when braking to stop at stations, may differ from normal weather conditions and cause the train to overrun the stations.

7. The depot is located next to Beach Station.

@dan474, @TIB1224Y & @nickgoh45 Thanks for all ur comments!Smile

@TIB1224Y The MRTC was taken over by LTA in the mid-90s, so by the time the rule for NSL and EWL trains to drive in CM Mode near construction sites was made LTA was already around.

What is the max speed limit for NEL and CCL trains at Sengkang and Kim Chuan Depots respectively?

Should be the same at around 16km/h. NEL/CCL trains are operated in RM in the depot as ATP codes are not available.

How does the STARIS route indicator above the C151/C651/C751B train doors work even without ATC/ATO?
The position of the train is worked out from the train's relative positions, based on the start point as set by the T/Op at the controller.

Where is the Sentosa Express depot located at?
Beside Beach. There's a 3-way crossover to the depot, which is where the bi-directional line splits into the double tracks.

Haha I often refer to the pre-NEL era as MRTC more on the nostalgia side, but yes you are right it is LTA already at that time.
