SINGAPORE - A train fault knocked out a stretch of the North-South Line (NSL) from Marina South Pier to Newton for almost an hour on Thursday (April 21) morning.

Mr Patrick Nathan, SMRT's vice-president for corporate information and communications, said services in the direction of Jurong East were affected as engineering staff worked to move a locomotive that had stalled at Raffles Place.

"A passenger train was activated to haul the faulty locomotive to Bishan Depot. The cause of the fault on the locomotive is being investigated," he said.

MRT system plagued by two breakdowns in a day

SINGAPORE: The Republic's MRT system saw two breakdowns on Thursday morning (Apr 21), first on the North-South Line and later along the North-East Line.

At 6.09am, public transport operator SMRT sent out a tweet informing commuters that there was no train service from Marina South Pier station to Newton station in the direction of Jurong East due to a train fault.

At 6.32am, SMRT sent out another tweet stating that train service from Raffles Place station to Marina South Pier station was unavailable, also due to a train fault.

Two MRT breakdowns in a day

Commuters saw their journeys disrupted by separate faults on the North-South and North East MRT lines yesterday.

On the North-South Line (NSL), a maintenance locomotive that stalled at Raffles Place station shut down northbound train services between Marina South Pier and Newton from the start of service till about 6.50am.

Just after 11am, a power fault disrupted train service between Outram Park and Farrer Park stations on the North East Line (NEL) for about 40 minutes.
