SINGAPORE - Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan on Tuesday (April 12) set a new target for rail network reliability this year - 200,000km travelled by MRT trains between delays.

While acknowledging that Singapore's MRT still trails behind Hong Kong's in terms of reliability, Mr Khaw said improvements have been made.

Last year, MRT trains travelled an average of 133,000km between delays of more than five minutes occurred - an improvement of 40 per cent from 2014's 93,000km, he said.

Factsheet on Professionalising the Rail Industry: Singapore Rail Academy
Press Release 12/04/16

To meet the long term manpower requirements of the rail industry, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will establish the Singapore Rail Academy (SGRA) to build up and deepen local engineering and research capabilities.

2. The rail industry currently employs over 6,000 workers for rail operations and maintenance, of whom more than half are engineers and technicians. To support the expansion of the rail network to 360km by 2030, it is estimated that an additional 5,000 workers will be needed. The SGRA will therefore be instrumental in developing capabilities and ensuring that standards for rail engineering, operations, maintenance and safety will meet the demands of the expanded rail network. Professor Cham Tao Soon (詹道存教授), former President of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and former Chairman, SIM University, will lead the setting up of the SGRA.

3. The key thrusts of the SGRA will be as follows:

Singapore Rail Academy to be set up for engineers
From: CNA
Date: 12/04/16

SINGAPORE: To help rail engineers and maintenance crew improve their skills and keep up with changes in technology, the Singapore Rail Academy will be set up to offer more dedicated training, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said on Tuesday (Apr 12).

Speaking at the Committee of Supply debate in Parliament, Mr Khaw said the academy will work with the rail operators and institutes of higher learning to provide training, as well as accreditation and certification of training programmes and competencies.

The idea of a national rail academy was first mooted by Mr Khaw last November. He said then that the Transport Ministry will be working with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to ensure that final year engineering modules include rail engineering.
