JR East to number stations
From: The Japan News
Date: 07/04/16

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — East Japan Railway Co., or JR East, said Wednesday that it will introduce a numbering system for 276 stations in Tokyo and surrounding areas in stages from Oct. 1.

The move is intended to help foreigners, including tourists, use its stations and trains more conveniently and find it easier to change trains, on the back of the ever-growing number of visitors to Japan and ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the company said.

JR East made the decision as similar systems already introduced by other railway operators, including Tokyo Metro Co., have been well received.
