Factsheet: Travel Smart Network
Press Release 07/03/16

The Travel Smart Network is an initiative by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to encourage employers to reduce the demand for peak hour travel in their organisations, and the use of more sustainable modes of travel. Travel Smart Network started in July 2012 with a two-year pilot that involved 12 organisations. Following the successful conclusion of the pilot, Travel Smart Network was launched in July 2014.

Today, Travel Smart Network organisations are able to tap on three new initiatives:

SINGAPORE - Travelling to work now takes management consultant Tan Shu Jie 20 minutes less than before. For the past three months, Mr Tan has been arriving at his Raffles Place office at 7.30am and the off-peak travel means emptier roads and a shorter commute for him.

Mr Tan's company is one of 90 which have signed up for the Land Transport Authority's Travel Smart Network programme, which was launched officially in 2014. Travel Smart is a host of initiatives aimed at easing the public transport crush during the morning peak from 8am to 9am.

The scheme provides options for a company's employees to travel outside of peak hours, such as through flexi-work arrangements.

To raise more awareness of Travel Smart initiatives among commuters, the authority set up a mobile food truck on Monday (Mar 7), and served 1,000 free lunches to passers-by at Raffles Place,

Mr Tan Shu Jie still takes the same route to work via a bus and the MRT, but now reaches his office in about half the time that he used to take.

For the past three months, Mr Tan, 26, a management consultant, has been setting out earlier from his Bishan home to reach his Raffles Place office by 7.30am. This means a shorter commute of 30 minutes.

"When I get to the office earlier, I can plan ahead and make my day more productive," said Mr Tan, who now goes home half an hour earlier.
