Rail work to shut down Amtrak trains for two weeks

Service on 10 daily Amtrak trains will be shut down for two weeks starting Oct. 17 to accommodate high-speed rail construction between St. Louis and Chicago.

The shutdown allows upgrades to six railroad bridges and other improvements as part the $1.8 billion high-speed rail program in Illinois, transportation officials said Friday.

Suspension of service from Oct. 17 to Oct. 31 also was timed to accommodate the Cubs and Cardinals baseball playoff series, according to a "bridge blitz" announcement from Amtrak, Union Pacific railroad and the Illinois Department of Transportation. Amtrak trains run on the Union Pacific line between St. Louis and Chicago.

More than 627,000 passengers rode eight daily Lincoln Service trains and two daily Texas Eagle trains from October 2014 through August of this year, according to Amtrak.

"The buses will mimic the train schedules and costs," Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.
Lincoln Service passengers will use chartered buses during the shutdown, while the Texas Eagle train will be rerouted.

Passengers on the route, which is among the busiest in the nation, have periodically switched to buses on sections of the route since high-speed rail work began in 2010 with a goal of 110-mph service between St. Louis and Chicago.
