Discussion About the Railway Industry
#1
Hey, Just wanted to let our local train enthusiast know about the railway industry.

I just read an article online about Alstom being offered $13.5 Billion for a takeover by General Electric.

Just in case you don't know General Electric is the company that won the Signalling contract for Thomson & Eastern Region Lines. While Alstom is the manufacturers of the C830, C751A, C830C, C751C trains as well as the signalling of the NEL/CCL.

These companies are constantly competing with each other to win contracts. And by doing a takeover, they will have one less competitor. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Manufacturer of the Crystal Mover (C810/C810A) as well as CAAS Skytrain and SPLRT) along with Siemens (Manufacturer of the C651) are also looking to buy over Alstom

In the past there has been many of such cases. In case you didnt know
our BPLRT C801 are manufactured by Adtranz which was bought over by Bombardier (Manufacturer of the C951)

Also Westing House (Manufacturers of the PSDs and Signalling on NSEWL) was also bought over by Invensys before Invensys was bought over by Siemens.

Just want to discuss what are your opinions on these? Does it affect your impressions of these train/railway manufacturers ?

I prefer things to stay as it is.

Alstom's products are equally excellent. Especially for Circle Line, it is almost 100% available and 99.96% reliable and efficient (quoting from an Alstom publication). I believe it is also doing well in its domestic business at home in France - Paris Metro (additional MP05 and new MP14 trains), Lille metro Line 1 makeover (new signalling and trains), as well as businesses in Asia (eg. China). It also recently announced its new Urbalis Fluence signalling and Axonis rail products would be implemented in Lille and India soon, any take over would be very abrupt as it will involve both sides to comply with terms agreed upon, workers having to transit to new managements, etc. Reputation may be affected after the take over, depending on the performance on the newly formed co.

No matter what, Alstom Transport should not accept that takeover. It should continue with its railway business. Its other businesses (Power, Grid, Energy) can be taken over by GE. I rather they have one more competitor with healthy competition in our railway industry, than to see one "eating up" the other just to win a business deal with our transport authority.

my opinions..

Seems like no one is interested in Alstom Transport? Even though all the companies mentioned are all manufacturers of Rolling Stock

If they could publish more technical documents on our trains and signalling on their websites maybe discussions here would be more frequent.

If only information was more open to the world wide web..

As long as service and product standards do not drop, a takeover is still alright.

But could there be a possibility of a takeover but company A (the mother company) and B (the taken over company) have their business and accounts separate ,just have the money support from A.

Something in the style this has been pretty common nowadays ,for example , the Facebook takeover of Oculus VR.

In the new Era of transport, nothing has changed, at least visibly. Disruption still a regular, and perhaps the bus is slow and safe...
