You actually rode the cable car to Sentosa? Should be very cheap last time ba? I remember going to Station no. 1 (Ferry Terminal) to board since I always rode a ferry from HBF to Sentosa last time.

Sentosa Monorail Stations (according to my super old map):
Station 1: Ferry Terminal
Station 2: Underwater World
Station 3: Fort Siloso (closed before Sentosa Monorail terminated operation)
Station 4: Cable Car
Station 5: Palawan Beach
Station 6: Ficus
Station 7: Gateway

Station 3 was in a sharp bend... then after that turn back in the direction of Station 2, then a right turn to Station 4.

Yes, I'm quite positive the trams were around during that time. I still have memories taking the monorail to the ferry terminal (if I'm not wrong, that's where RWS currently stands) and yes, I think that the Sentosa Express is not very good. It would be better, if there were a few more stops on the Sentosa Express after Beach Station (I would suggest it turn to the right, since there seems to be more developement that way), but I don't think it would be possible, considering that the line must turn sharply before it reaches the sea.

The Sentosa Monorail's minimum turn radius is 50m I think.
