China, Japan jostle for lead role in Singapore-KL rail project

Malaysia and Singapore have yet to iron out major elements that will shape the multibillion-dollar high- speed rail project that will link the island state with Kuala Lumpur.

But that has not deterred the governments of China and Japan from pressing their influence on the two South-east Asian neighbours to position their home-grown engineering concerns advantageously, ahead of an international tender to be called in the first quarter of next year.

In recent weeks, Japanese and Chinese government officials, together with their private-sector executives from the rail industry, have been lobbying the Malaysian government and key agencies overseeing the transport sector to push their respective agendas for the construction of the 350km link.

MoU for KL-Singapore High Speed Rail to be signed mid-2016: Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the High Speed Rail linking Kuala Lumpur and Singapore will be signed in the middle of this year, Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak announced on Tuesday (Apr 12).

He was speaking at the Invest Malaysia Kuala Lumpur conference, held at the Shangri-La Hotel in KL on Tuesday and Wednesday.

When completed, commuters on the High Speed Rail are expected to complete their journey between Singapore and KL in 90 minutes. Currently, it takes up to eight hours by train and about five hours by express bus to travel between the two cities. The 315km journey by road takes close to four hours, while flights take 45 minutes, excluding airport check-in and transfers to the city.

Singapore-Malaysia high-speed rail MOU to be signed by mid-2016: Najib

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Malaysia is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Singapore by the middle of 2016 for the development of a high-speed rail (HSR) linking both countries, said Prime Minister Najib Razak.

"We expect to sign (the) MOU in the middle of this year with Singapore," Datuk Seri Najib said of the proposed HSR link with Singapore.

In his keynote address at the 12th Invest Malaysia (IMKL2016) here on Tuesday (April 12), Mr Najib said the development projects under the 11th Malaysia Plan would remain unaffected despite the government having to revise its budget and cut spending in response to the drop in crude oil prices.
